Village Electronics Recycling is highly esteemed to have donated four laptops and three tablets for patient use at the palliative unit at Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The Tom Baker Cancer Center is the premier cancer center for patients from all over Southern Alberta. Many patients arrive to the hospital in emergency situations from out of town and either do not have or can not access the technology to keep in touch with loved ones and the outside world.
Compounding the challenges related to geographical isolation, the COVID situation limits the number of visitors a patient can have for the safety of everyone. However, with ubiquitous internet and our donation of electronics, that barrier is eliminated.
With the help of of our amazing clients like You, we were able to refurbish and donate unwanted, unused laptops with DVD drives–perceived these days as an ‘outdated’ feature. Before our donation, the palliative unit had only one DVD player and TV for the entire unit. Now, patients who are bedridden can now watch DVDs in their bed along with all of the other features that can be accessed with these internet ready devices.
The construction of Tom Baker’s brand new and much larger facility, the Calgary Cancer Center is almost complete and will open to patients in 2023. That facility will have a bring-your-device setup (ie no televisions), and we anticipate that we can continue helping patients at the Calgary Cancer Center in the future with more portable devices for their happiness and comfort.
It is a tremendous honor to work hard at this endeavor so we can help the community through technology. Being in the hospital is a highly stressful situation and we hope this donation can bring joy, happiness, and connectivity to the patients of the palliative unit at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary.
